How To Create A Social Media Plan

The world has taken to a direction that dictates that social media is vital for your business. This only means you need an actual social media plan.

Social media is a vital marketing channel for businesses of all sizes. The common question a few years ago, “why should our business use social media?”, is now being replaced with, “how can our business grow with social media marketing?”.

There is so much that goes on – from Instagram to Facebook Ads, and twitter engagements. Your social media plan is mostly dependent on where you see yourself and your company going.

An Effective Social Media Marketing Plan


1. Understand Your Current Position

Before you go out to reaching out to people on your social media, look in a mirror, and understand where you are and get yourself in order. Here are a few to look into:

  • Which networks are you currently active on
  • Are your networks optimized (photo and cover images, bio, URL, etc.)
  • Which networks are currently bringing you the most value
  • How do your profiles compare to your competitors’ profiles

2. Who’s Your Customer?

After figuring out who you are, the next plan in the social media plan is your immediate customer.

Your social media marketing strategy is going to be a whole lot useless if you don’t know who you are going to be communicating with. There are over 3 billion social media users and not all 3 billion are your audience.

And concerning your business or product, who are your immediate market? You may need to go further and understand what information you are going to share that is important to them, and which social media platform they consider most useful in that regard. And finally, which ways do your customers consume their information – read social media posts, watch videos, use infographics.

Answer the following questions to help you come up with a highly focused buyer persona:

  • Age
  • Location
  • Job Title
  • Income
  • Pain Points (that your business can solve)
  • Most Used Social Network

Try creating audience/buyer personas. These allow you to think of your potential fans, followers, and customers as real people with real wants and needs. And that will allow you to think more clearly about what to offer them.

Buying followers for an audience won’t yield anything good as the targetting will be skewed given the variance of people behind these social media accounts.

3. Create A Social Media Mission Statement

This is the statement that will determine your direction and once you veer away from it, the social media plan is in ruins. This statement should make you unique.

4. Social Media Plan Key Metrics

Simply put, these are the success measures you are going to use to assess your campaign:

A few metrics to consider measuring are:

  • Conversion Rate
  • Time Spent on Website
  • Reach
  • Brand Mentions
  • Sentiment
  • Total Shares

5. Curate Content

Content is key. These are the different message venues you are going to go through to reach out to your audience.

Here are a few examples of content you could create:

  • Images
  • Videos
  • Blog Posts
  • Company News
  • Infographics
  • eBooks
  • Interviews

Share away. Reach out to your audience following the steps above but don’t forget to run analytics. It might seem basic, but tracking your results, analyzing the data, and then making tweaks to optimize them is crucial.
